Regulations
• Page 9 – Regulation No. 5 (ii) – CHANGE: A competitor may enter a Provincial class and a noProvincial
class with the same or similar class titles – “Class 10321 – Piano Solo, Recital Piece (12 years & under) (P)
and Class 20307, Piano Solo, Recital Piece (12 years & and under). The competitor may not enter the same repertoire in both classes.


Recorded accompaniment is NOT allowed with the following exceptions:
Page 9 – Regulation No. 8: The piano is the instrument to be used for accompaniment. Exceptions are listed in the rubric for each class. Use of a digital piano for accompanying is acceptable using the piano setting and transpose feature, if required. Copyright regulations apply.
Page 9 – Regulation No. 9: Recorded digital audio, for percussion, is acceptable when published in the score.


MARKING
1. The following table indicates the method of evaluation:

A+                      or 90 & above               signifies superior performance
A                        or 85 to 89                     signifies distinction
A-                       or 80 to 84                     signifies definite merit
Marks/ratings below 80/A- (minus) are no longer assigned.
ELIGIBILITY FOR ENTRY TO PROVINCIAL FINALS (page 11):
1. Competitors must:
    iii. obtain a mark of 87 or higher and place first in the class. In classes where two selections
         are performed, the combined mark must average 87 or higher. A mark of 87 or higher is
         required in the Canada West Excellence Classes to be eligible to advance to the
         Provincial level. Alternates with qualifying marks will be contacted by Provincial Office.
CHANGE: TWO (2) qualified entries (first and second place, with mark of 87 or higher) will be
eligible to advance to Provincial Finals from each District Festival in every Provincial Scholarship
Class.
TWO (2) qualified entries (first and second place, with mark of 87 or higher) will be eligible to advance
to the Provincial level of Canada West Excellence Classes. Alternates with qualifying marks will be
contacted by Provincial Office.

• Music downloaded from www.imslp.org is permitted. Please write the full URL of the work being
performed on the first page of all parts and copies being used. It is the responsibility of the user to
ensure copyright laws are being followed.


Canada West Excellence Classes
Please consult the Canada West Performing Arts Festival Rules and Syllabus 2024 for up-to-date regulations.
Competitors must read and comply with all festival rules. Non-compliance of any rule may result in the
disqualification of the competitor. Information for specific disciplines (exclusions, special rules, etc.) may be
found under the description of disciplines and must also be observed.

For all Solo and Chamber Music Classes, effective in 2023, age divisions change to 13 years & under,
17 years & under, and 22 years & under.

Effective in 2023, program notes are no longer required at any level of Canada West Competition.


Effective in 2024, piano concertos may not be performed as the availability of a second piano cannot be
guaranteed by each hosting province.


Provincial Classes
Effective in 2024, the qualifying mark in all Provincial Classes is 87.
• Page 27 – Class 12014 Lower Voices Chorus (Open) (P) is numbered in error. Class number should be
10214.
Class 10262 (Page 30) – CORRECTION: Class title should read:
Tenor, Baritone, Bass Solo, Grade B (28 years & under) (P)
Scholarship title should read:
VOCAL TENOR, BARITONE, BASS, GRADE B (28 YEARS & UNDER SCHOLARSHIP CLASS - $400

Class 10300 (Page 33) – CORRECTION: Rubric should include: For multi-movement works such as the
Suites and Partitas, it is acceptable to perform the complete work OR any number of movements.
Class 10301 (Page 33) – CHANGE: Piano Sonata, Beethoven/Schubert (28 years & under) (P)
Own choice, one movement from the works of Beethoven/Schubert. Selection must be of
Grade 10 level, or higher, The adjudicator will rule on the level of difficulty of any ungraded
selections.
Classes 10301 and 10302 both feed in to the scholarship class:
PIANO SONATA (28 YEARS & UNDER) SCHOLARSHIP CLASS - $400
Class 10303 (Page 33) – CHANGE: Time limit of 20 minutes.
Class 10307 (Page 33) – CHANGE: Time limit of 15 minutes.
Class 10308 (Page 34) – CHANGE: Time limit of 15 minutes.
Class 10309 (Page 34) – CHANGE: Time limit of 15 minutes.
Class 10311 (Page 34) – CHANGE: Piano Sonata, Beethoven/Schubert (17 years & under) (P)
Own choice, one movement from the works of Beethoven (with the exception of Op. 49, Nos. 1 and 2)
or Schubert. Selection must be of Grade 9 level, or higher. The adjudicator will rule on the level of
difficulty of any ungraded selections.
Class 10311.1 (Page 34) – CHANGE OF CLASS NUMBER: Piano Sonata, Haydn/Mozart (17 years & under) (P)
Own choice, one movement, from the works of Haydn/Mozart. Selection must be of Grade 9 level, or higher.
The adjudicator will rule on the level of difficulty of any ungraded selections.
Classes 10311 and 10311.1 both feed in to the scholarship class:
PIANO SONATA (17 YEARS & UNDER) SCHOLARSHIP CLASS - $300
Class 10312 (Page 34) – CHANGE: Piano Solo, Romantic/Chopin (17 years & under) (P)
Time limit of 15 minutes. Own choice, one selection from works in the Romantic tradition, including Chopin.
Selection must be of Grade 9 level, or higher. The adjudicator will rule on the level of difficulty of any
ungraded selections.
Scholarship title is changed to PIANO ROMANTIC/CHOPIN (17 YEARS & UNDER) SCHOLARSHIP CLASS - $300
Class 10312.1 (Page 34) – NEW PROVINCIAL CLASS: Piano Solo, French Music (17 years & under) (P)
Own choice, one selection. Selection must be of Grade 9 level or higher. The adjudicator will rule on the

level of difficulty of any ungraded selections.
Class 10316 (Page 35) – CORRECTION: Selections must be of Grade 9 level or higher.
Class 10323 (Page 35) – CORRECTION: Class title should read:
Piano Solo, Saskatchewan Repertoire (12 years & under) (P)
Page 40 – ADDITION:
Date ranges refer to the year the musical was first staged.
Page 40 – CLARIFICATION:
“Stand-alone” repertoire and selections from revues are not permitted.
Class 10801 (Page 43) – CORRECTION: Class description should read:
